I came across an interesting problem tonight while trying to set up Skype to call my sister who recently moved to Okinawa Japan with her husband who is deployed to the Air Base there.
When dialing their phone number from a regular phone the requirement is 011 (signal international call) 81 (Country Code) 6117 xx xxxx where 6117 is the “base exchange”. This works fine, we had to do this before when they were deployed in Japan from ‘99 to ‘05.
Using this combo while dialing from Skype however, proved problematic. I kept getting a recorded Japanese operator message.
After much googling I found that there is some number translation going on in the phone switching equipment and indeed there was a way to bypass it.
Dialing using the following 81 (Country Code) 98 (Okinawa/Naha) City Code and the translated “base exchange number” to the outside phone switch number. In my case 633 became 959 and then xxxx.
I found the translation list here http://www.okinawahai.com/my_weblog/phones/ .
I’m not sure if the protocol for this might be the same for other international bases but hope this will be helpful for anyone trying to reach family overseas on the cheap.
As an aside, we’re lucky to be able to have http://www.nanpa.com/ which is pretty damn spiffy especially since its use was started in 1951 by Bellcore.
Stage 1: Help, I see myself in every MC During this stage, we will study and scrutinize Missed Connections posts to see which ones could possibly apply to us. Expect to hear some arguing along the lines of: “It is obviously for me.” “It’s MAN for WOMAN! It’s mine!” “She obviously hit the wrong choice in her haste to contact me via an anonymous message board!” This stage is hopeful and will thus involve few tears. However, intense mood swings may occur.
So lets see. Oregon Health Sciences University has concretely decided its Crohn’s. So what’s happened lately?
Crohn’s cost me my job at New Edge.
I’m starting Humira this week *hopefully*.
My leg keeps going numb/burning sensation (as if I don’t have enough problems).
I have been completely unmotivated to do much of anything. I’ve lost about 60 pounds since April when I stopped the steroids so I’m getting skinny again (this is the only part I like about being sick). Within the last month I’ve been super tired, the fatigue has been a problem before but not on this scale, I’ve been sleeping upwards of 22 hours on some days and then I’ll get up for 4 or 5 hours and even small errands like going to the grocery store absolutely wipes me out.Talk about lame. I’ve started taking vitamins and B12 every day and its *seems* to have helped a little bit but not much.
Time to get to bed though, I have an interview tomorrow =)
Got back on Tuesday from Tucson Arizona. A much needed 6 day vacation to visit my sister and niece before the entire family moves (sister, bro in law, nephew and niece) back to Japan for another 3 year deployment -sigh- I’m just getting back on the grid as it were. I basically didn’t use my laptop the entire time I was there except to download spyware removal software for my sis’s desktop machine which was hosed.
I have a doctor’s appointment in the morning to see what else can be done for me. The arthritis is getting out of control and I’m starting to slide backwards again. I thought I was losing weight as my clothes are fitting looser (holy shit the appropriate use of “loose” instead of “lose”) but scale says I’ve gained 5 pounds which is fine with me. When you deal with some unknown process where you lose nearly 1/3 of your body weight in 3 months, gaining 5 pounds is no big deal. My hope is to get a referral to OHSU, even though that means having to re-do every single test I’ve already done. Its worth it if someone can figure what the hell is wrong. I’m still convinced its Crohns or some derivative but I’m not an MD.
My Jeep Cherokee blew a radiator hose today while I was jump starting my VW Jetta so I could go get the battery and alternator checked out. Fortunately the hose was salvageable and I found out the Jetta has a bad alternator so thats been purchased. I need to find a shop to drop it in for me though, its beyond the time I have available and my energy levels to get it done in a timely manner so I’m just going to pay a few bucks to get it done the right way quickly.
Ciao for now,
Drew-
Looks like it isn’t a hack. One of the people who’s site I host is just really popular :) He needs to fix some of his php session code though.
Someone was trying to hack my box in PDX it looks like. I had to remove 71,000 bogus session files from /tmp. Good times! Disabled Gallery since I use Flickr now which is much much better.
